What is ORAC?
ORAC, short for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity.
2007-06-06
ORAC is a test tube analysis that measures the total antioxidant power of foods and other chemical substances. Antioxidant power is the ability to neutralize oxygen free radicals. Therefore ORAC testing is a way to measure how many oxygen radicals a specific food can absorb. The more oxygen radicals a food can absorb, the higher its ORAC score.
"The current recommendation of 5 to 10 servings of fruit and vegetables a day translates to approximately 4.000 to 7.000 ORAC units/day. Studies show that world wide, the average person now consumes less than 2.000 ORAC units a day. Therefore it is clear that supplements high in ORAC value are necessary."
